Fuzzy Lights

Foxy Digitalis

Fuzzy Lights hail from England, but their main musical inspirations seem to be mostly North American. Their folky, rustic take on post-rock is reminiscent of Dirty Three (especially for its excellent use of violin), several Constellation related bands, and of course Neil Young. I was afraid this would veer to close to scruffy beardo indie-rock for my tastes, but it actually works quite well. The band does a good job balancing introspective beauty with freakout noise (without getting too chaotic), and they use improvisation as a successful means of artistic freedom without getting strayed too far off the path. A few tracks feature sung vocals, but they feel more like incidental narration rather than an attempt at more traditional pop song structure. In short, this album is interesting for its foreign take on Americana and its balance of moods and elements. 7/10 — Paul Simpson (21 January, 2009)
